This presentation includes a brief overview of the history of the discovery of the venous valve, relevant studies supporting the presence, prevalence, and morphology of the typical axillary, subclavian, and IJ valves and discussion of how the presence of these valves are the most common and likely cause of inability to advance PICCs and CVCs based on the most common research findings available.  Illustrations and US images will be used as appropriate.  The presentation includes discussion & description of how catheters and guidewires interact with the venous valves as well as current strategies we employ to advance catheters past these valves and why those strategies may or may not work.  To register:  REGISTER NOW

Abstract Background:  Centrally inserted central catheters (CICCs) are commonly used to monitor venous pressure and administer parenteral nutrition and drugs in newborns.  In the present study, cannulation success rates, cannulation time, and frequency of complications in catheterization of the internal jugular vein (IJV) and brachiocephalic vein (BCV) were evaluated.
